Virtual Reality System: U.S. Patent No. 7,224,326 “Virtual reality system”
This patent describes a head-mounted device which can be worn by a user while exercising.
- The user is presented with a 360 degree virtual surrounding. Additional sensors take into account the speed with which the user is pedaling on the stationary bike, rowing on a rowing machine, stepping on a elliptical machine, and also the gaze direction of the user. The view displayed on the head-mounted-device is varied in accordance with the aforementioned two parameters. In addition the view can be output to a standard TV or CRT device.
- The rise in the “exergaming” market is expected to increase emphasis on innovative products which can capture a user’s imagination while keeping him/ her hooked on to an exercise machine. The advent of products such as Nintendo Wii is expected to give rise to many other players who will compete in this space for a piece of the Billion dollar fitness industry.
- A combination of video games and exercise equipment requires a user to exercise while playing a game in order to advance through levels. Virtual reality is one such technology that is trying to bridge between exercising and gaming.
